San Raflu Lake is a small artificial freshwater pond surrounded by farmland and limestone countryside in western Gozo. Although modest in size, it is notable because it is considered the island’s only permanent freshwater body. The site is mainly visited as a quiet rural stop on hiking routes between Dwejra, Ras il-Wardija, and the western cliffs of Gozo.
Historically, the area has long been agricultural land. The pond collects water year-round and supports frogs, birds, terrapins, ducks, and local vegetation. The name “San Raflu” probably derives from the Archangel Raphael, though historians are uncertain about the exact origin.
The place is also known locally for the annual Fiera tal-Għadira, an agricultural fair held after Easter since 1981, where farmers traditionally sell produce and livestock.
For visitors, San Raflu is less a “must-see attraction” and more a peaceful countryside waypoint:
good for short walks and photography
often combined with hikes to nearby Punic ruins at Ras il-Wardija
close to the cliffs and coastal scenery near Dwejra Bay
appreciated mostly by hikers, locals, and nature enthusiasts rather than mainstream tourists
