Mġarr ix-Xini

Mġarr ix-Xini is a secluded bay hidden at the end of a deep, narrow valley on Gozo’s southern coast, between the villages of Xewkija and Sannat. Surrounded by steep limestone slopes and unspoilt countryside, the bay has a small pebbly shoreline and exceptionally clear, sheltered water, creating one of the island’s most peaceful coastal settings.

The bay has long been valued as a natural harbour and is traditionally associated with the galleys of the Knights of St John. Standing above its entrance is the historic Mġarr ix-Xini Tower, once used to watch over the surrounding coastline. More recently, the bay became internationally known as a filming location for the movie By the Sea.

Today, Mġarr ix-Xini is especially popular for swimming, snorkelling, diving and kayaking. Its calm water and rocky seabed provide excellent opportunities to observe fish and other marine life, while the surrounding valley offers a quiet escape from Gozo’s busier beaches.

🤿 Swimming and Snorkelling: The sheltered, transparent water and rocky sides make this one of Gozo’s most enjoyable places for snorkelling.

👟 Wear Water Shoes: The shoreline is mainly pebbles and rocks, so suitable footwear will make entering the water more comfortable.

🚗 Getting There: The bay is reached by a narrow and winding country road. Drive carefully, particularly when meeting vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.

🅿️ Parking: Parking close to the beach is limited and the bay can become busy during summer. Arriving early is recommended.

🏰 Visit the Tower: Follow the coastal path towards Mġarr ix-Xini Tower for beautiful views across the bay and the open sea.

🎬 Film Location: Parts of By the Sea, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, were filmed around the bay in 2014.

🥤 Bring Supplies: Services around the bay may be limited or seasonal, so carry drinking water, sun protection and anything else you may need.

🌊 Check the Conditions: The bay is usually sheltered, but visitors should always assess the sea and weather conditions before swimming or kayaking.
