Rotunda St. John Baptist Church

The Rotunda of St John the Baptist is the magnificent parish church of Xewkija and one of Gozo’s most recognisable landmarks. Its enormous dome rises high above the surrounding village and can be seen from many parts of the island. Built from warm local limestone, the church demonstrates the skill of Gozitan stoneworkers and the strong religious traditions of the local community.

Construction of the present church began in 1952 on the site of an older parish church. Remarkably, the new Rotunda was built around the earlier building so that religious services could continue during construction. Once the new church was completed, the old structure was carefully dismantled, with several important sculptures and architectural elements preserved in the adjoining museum.

Inside, visitors are greeted by a vast circular space, impressive stonework, marble flooring and a richly decorated sanctuary dedicated to St John the Baptist. The Rotunda is Gozo’s largest church and is particularly famous for its monumental unsupported dome, which dominates Xewkija’s skyline.
